Voicemail
Voicemail typically provides a central "answering machine" for users of a telephone system. The user can divert calls to the voicemail system or the telephone system can be programmed to do this after a programmed time such as 5 rings. When a call is diverted to the voicemail system it will play a personalised message to the caller and allow them to leave a message for the extension user. This will then display a light on the users telephone or provide an interrupted dial tone informing them there is a message waiting for them. Users can also access the voicemail system whilst out of the office by dialling a dedicated number and inserting their extension number and password
Most voicemail systems also provide Auto Attendant which offers options for routing callers to departments or extensions and for giving out information.

Unified Messaging
Unified Messaging is the next generation of voicemail. Instead of informing the user by their handset the voicemail arrives in the users email inbox. The message can then be played via the PC or played via their telephone handset if the call is private. Messages can be sped up, slowed down, repeated saved etc using their mouse or keyboard. The voicemail can also be emailed to other users and archived for future reference.
Unified Messaging also allows the users Direct Number (DDI Number) to become their personal fax line. Any faxes sent to the users DDI number will arrive in the users inbox in exactly the same way as an email or voicemail again this can be archived or forwarded to another user as an email or sent to another fax number directly from your computer.
Unified messaging also allows you to retrieve voicemails and faxes whilst out of the office if you have remote access to emails.
